The ABAP language

The ABAP (Advanced Business Application Programming) is the primary programming language supported by the SAP NetWeaver ABAP application server platform and applications built on it (SAP ERP, S/4HANA and CRM).

SAP uses ABAP to implement its own applications on the NetWeaver ABAP platform and SAP clients use the ABAP programming language to modify the functionality of SAP applications or build their own on the NetWeaver ABAP platform.

ABAP is the oldest and the most widely used of SAP’s four main application platforms (also including SAP NetWeaver Java, SAP HANA and SAP Cloud Platform).

The importance of the ABAP programming language

Although with the advent of the HANA platform ABAP’s role was reduced in some products, ABAP is still central to SAP’s most widely implemented applications. The ABAP language also plays an important role in SAP’s next-generation S/4HANA ERP platform.
